SPEEDY half-forward Gary Rohan has agreed to a three-year contract extension to remain with the Sydney Swans.

A Swans spokesman confirmed the new deal to AFL.com.au on Friday afternoon, with both parties reaching the agreement recently.

Rohan was originally contracted to the end of 2014, but the new deal will take him through to the conclusion of the 2017 season.

Swans coach John Longmire lauded Rohan for his dedication to battle back from a serious leg injury in 2012.

"I think people can underestimate how difficult it is to return from an injury as serious as what Gary suffered," Longmire said.

"He has had to overcome some serious hurdles over the last few years, but he has bounced back really well and we are excited to see what he can bring to our team in 2014 and beyond."

The 22-year-old looked polished in a three-goal performance against West Coast in Blacktown on Thursday night and the Swans are confident he is ready for a breakout 2014.

Rohan's signing is a major coup for the Swans, who have lost Shane Mumford, Jed Lamb and Jesse White in recent years, due to the salary cap pressures associated with Lance Franklin's lucrative deal.

The sickening leg injury suffered against North Melbourne in 2012, threatened to stunt Rohan's development.

The incident, involving North Melbourne's Lindsay Thomas, was a key reason behind the AFL's crackdown on sliding into contests legs first.

Rohan fought his way back through the NEAFL and, to the delight of Longmire, managed to play five of the last six games in the seniors at the end of last year.

So far in the 2014 NAB Challenge series, his kicking at goal has been nothing short of superb while his trademark speed has been there for all to see.

The 22-year-old has played 27 games for the Swans after being drafted out of Cobden, southwest of Victoria, with pick No.6 in the 2009 NAB AFL Draft.
