HISTORY will be made in the WAFL Grand Final on Sunday at Patersons Stadium as Lauren French and Sally Boud become the first female goal-umpiring duo to officiate in a senior Grand Final.

Sunday's decider between East Perth and Subiaco will be the first Grand Final for both Boud and French.

Boud, 24, said it would be an incredible experience for the pair as they are best friends.

"It's really good because we actually started umpiring together," she told AFL.com.au.

"It's nice to reach the pinnacle together. It's really exciting and I couldn't ask for anyone better to do it with."

Their journey began as 15-year-olds at school. The pair attended Helena College, in the Hills district of Perth, and their interest in football stemmed from French's love for the Fremantle Dockers.

"I used to always go to the footy," French said.

"I just sort of grew to love it."

French filled in as a goal umpire at a school game one afternoon in 2005. Their maths teacher, a boundary umpire, encouraged the footy mad duo to get involved in boundary umpiring.

"There was too much running involved in boundary umpiring so we said we'd do goals," Boud said.

Both rose through the ranks quickly, beginning in amateur football before moving into through the WAFL grades. French made her WAFL senior debut in late 2009 and Boud was elevated to senior ranks the next season.

Both are busy away from football. Boud is studying teaching and has an exam to sit on Thursday ahead of Sunday's Grand Final. French works part-time as a draughtsperson while studying architecture.

They have ambitions to rise to the AFL ranks but both are philosophical about their chances given the limited opportunities available on the national panel.

French said the pair had received plenty of encouragement from Chelsea Roffey, who became the first female goal umpire to officiate in an AFL Grand Final in 2012.

"I have had the opportunity to meet her a few times," French said.

"The times that she's come to WA she's made an effort to go to a game or two of ours. The coaches have teed it up so she can meet us and give us a bit of feedback."
