THE 2014 AFL International Cup was launched at Federation Square on Saturday, to the applause and cheers of the many countries and nationalities competing in the tournament.

All 25 teams - 18 men's and seven women's - from 18 countries were present at the launch, kicking off the fifth edition of the football carnival that will run over the next 15 days.

After being presented on stage, the teams took off on a march to the MCG where they formed the Parade of Nations ahead of the Hawthorn-Melbourne clash at the ground.

The men's teams are comprised from Canada, China, Fiji, Finland, France, Indonesia, Ireland, Great Britain, India, Japan, Nauru, New Zealand, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, South Africa, Sweden, Tonga and the USA.

The women's teams are from Canada – Northern Lights, Canada – Midnight Suns, Ireland, Fiji, Tonga, USA – Freedom and USA – Liberty. 

The Premier of Victoria, Dr Denis Napthine, was delighted to welcome the teams to Melbourne.

"I wish you all the very best for the competition, a spirited competition, competitive games and may the best teams win," Dr Napthine said.

"It is really fantastic to have so many teams here and I wish you well for a great competition."

AFL general manager people, customer and community Dorothy Hisgrove said the International Cup was renowned as a prestigious tournament. 

"The International Cup is one of the standout events on the AFL calendar, as it reflects the inclusive nature of Australian football and the continued enthusiasm of the game around the world," Ms Hisgrove said.

After four preliminary rounds, two grand finalists in both the men's and women's divisions will go head to head for the coveted silverware.

The women's Grand Final will be played at Punt Road Oval and the men's Grand Final will be the curtain-raiser to the round 22 AFL match between Hawthorn and Geelong (on August 23) at the MCG.

For the first time a community round will be also be played as curtain-raisers to suburban, amateur and country matches on the middle Saturday of the tournament on August 16.

The International Cup is played every three years. Previous winners were Ireland (2002 & 2011), New Zealand (2005) and Papua New Guinea (2008).
