FREMANTLE forward Cam McCarthy has been diagnosed with epilepsy after collapsing at training last week.

McCarthy was medically cleared to fly to the club's Gold Coast hub for the resumption of the season with his Dockers teammates on Tuesday, but has since been diagnosed with the condition by specialists.

He subsequently won't face the Lions this weekend as he continues his recovery from the scary incident.

"Cam has undergone various tests with specialists and a neurologist," Fremantle football boss Peter Bell said.

"Recently, the neurologist advised that Cam has epilepsy. This will mean that Cam has to undergo some treatment, which involves medication for a period of time.

"Cam’s working his way through that and the club will support him as well with our medical team."

McCarthy has since returned to training following the incident, which saw him taken to hospital in an ambulance, but will not make his return to face Brisbane at the Gabba on Saturday afternoon.

"As far as football is concerned, Cam will continue to build to play," Bell said.

"There’s no reason, according to the specialist, that he can’t continue to play AFL football.

"Given the interruptions to his training program, he won’t be playing this weekend. However, he trained strongly on Thursday and took part in the match simulation.

"We’ll make an assessment depending on how he trains and how he’s feeling for next week."
