WEST Coast midfielder Andrew Gaff says the Eagles were almost powerless to stop Fremantle's midfield on Sunday and they need to fix the problem quickly.
Freo embarrassed the Eagles’ midfield during the 30-point loss at Domain Stadium on Sunday.
Fremantle had 16 more contested possessions, 11 more clearances, 12 more inside 50s and nine more tackles in an opening term blitz that drove the Dockers to a 52-point quarter-time lead.
Gaff said his team just could not get its hands on the ball.
"We were almost powerless when we couldn't win the ball and they just kept pumping it into the forward 50 and kept scoring," Gaff said.
"It's something we need to get better at - stopping momentum as a team and we need to do it pretty quickly."
West Coast's midfield has been perceived as a weakness but Gaff rejected the suggestion that the club needs to add some midfield quality to its list sooner rather than later.
"We don't think so," Gaff said.
"I think we proved last week (against Carlton, which) has a lot of quality mids - (Mark) Murphy, (Bryce) Gibbs, (Andrew) Carrazzo - we thought we convincingly got the edge over Carlton.
"We didn't see why we couldn't do it yesterday. It's a long season and as mids we have to prove that we can bounce back quickly."
The midfield could get a shake-up this round against the Brisbane Lions.
Youngster Brant Colledge has been dominating in the WAFL over the past few weeks. He has averaged 34 disposals and two goals across each of his past three matches for East Perth and Gaff said he deserved an opportunity.
"It's hard to ignore his form," Gaff said.
"He deserves to be in contention for this week. I think it would be great if Brant came in."
The Eagles may be forced to make at least one change with key defender Jeremy McGovern unlikely to get up for the trip to Brisbane after injuring his knee against Fremantle.
McGovern hurt his knee in the second term and was sent to the rooms for treatment. He returned to start on the ground after half-time but was subbed out in the third term.
Gaff said it was deflating to see yet another key defender go down - after the ACL injuries to Eric Mackenzie and Mitch Brown - but he said the group had to soldier on.
"No doubt it's deflating seeing them go down," Gaff said.
"It's something we need to get over, and stand up as a collective.
"We don't know how long ‘Gov’ is going to miss, or if he's going to miss.
"But we do feel like we've got guys who can stand up. (Callum) Sinclair and (Fraser) McInnes played in the backline in the WAFL over the weekend. Tom Barrass played well as well."
