WEST Coast will be without Jeremy McGovern for this week's important clash with Brisbane, after the All Australian's one-match suspension was upheld by the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night.

McGovern had attempted to argue the 'low impact' grading of his charge, having struck Gold Coast forward Alex Sexton with a blow to the chin during their spiteful encounter at Metricon Stadium on Saturday night.

However, the Eagles defender was unable to convince the AFL Tribunal that insufficient force had been involved in the hit and will now miss this Saturday night's clash with the Lions at the Gabba.

McGovern was offered a one-match ban by the Match Review following a dirty night in his side's shock loss to Gold Coast, where he also received a $1000 rough conduct fine for pushing Sexton into a fence after the ball had travelled out of play.

Sexton himself was fined $1000 for engaging in rough conduct with McGovern earlier in the match.

However, McGovern revealed his surprise upon learning of his striking charge and subsequent suspension on Sunday night, saying he "didn't even know" he had hit Sexton in the face during their encounter.

West Coast will be made to pay $10,000 for its unsuccessful Tribunal appeal.
