THE AFL's pre-season draft has a future according to the League, despite the likelihood of a record low one pick at Wednesday's meet.

Greater Western Sydney is set to be the only club to use a pick at the pre-season draft, with the Giants committed to Jed Lamb with the first selection.

But other clubs with pre-season selections – Collingwood, Richmond, Carlton and the Sydney Swans - are likely to forgo their picks and head into the season with shorter primary lists as clubs shy away from using the pre-season draft as an option of adding players.

Greater Western Sydney has another four picks - and may choose to use one more - it can use but does not have to fill those places on its list.

While the League's free agency era has begun, and allows some players to be recruited as delisted free agents, the AFL sees the pre-season draft as an important part of the exchange process apart from the free agency periods.

It is viewed that the pre-season draft still provides a mechanism for a player who is ineligible for free agency to move clubs, and is a strong equalisation tool for the club who finishes last in acquiring an out-of-contract player.

All elements of the trade, free agency and draft period will be reviewed, although it is believed there are no immediate plans to reinvigorate or change the pre-season draft despite the picks being at an all-time low in 2013.

Despite the lack of selections on Wednesday, the threat of the pre-season draft can act as a push for clubs to complete trades instead of losing players for no return.

The Swans agreed to trade Shane Mumford to the Giants with the possibility he could have headed there for nothing through the pre-season draft, the same if former Crows midfielder Bernie Vince wanted to head to Melbourne via a pre-season selection.
