BRISBANE Lions members have overwhelmingly voted to ditch the club's much-maligned 'Paddle Pop Lion' jumper and replace it with the guernsey worn in the three premierships between 2001 and 2003.

The results of a members' survey on the matter was announced at the club's annual general meeting on Wednesday night.

It was revealed that 71.4 per cent of the 3000 respondents wanted a change.

However, the old jumper won't return until 2015.

"The AFL have a policy where we are locked in to the end of the 2014 season with the current guernsey," Lions chief executive Malcolm Holmes explained back in May.

The 'Paddle Pop Lion' jumper was introduced for the 2010 season, and it immediately sparked an outcry, especially from former Fitzroy supporters.

The guernsey it replaced had been worn since the Brisbane Lions were created by a merger of Fitzroy and the Brisbane Bears in 1996.

A number of Lions supporter groups campaigned strongly in recent months to bring back the old jumper.

"The jumper is so important to the identity, culture and heritage of a football club," Adam Staines, a spokesman for The Lion's Roar, said earlier this year.
