Lions pounce on McGuane as Staker signs for two more years
Versatile big man signs new two-year deal as club commits to ex-Tiger
BRENT Staker has signed a two-year contract with the Brisbane Lions, keeping him at the club until at least the end of 2015.
The club has also taken another step to bolster its stock of key position players by signing Richmond's delisted free agent Luke McGuane.
Staker has been with the Lions for four seasons after crossing from West Coast and made a successful return in 2013 from successive knee reconstructions.
The 29-year-old played the last 15 games of the season, being used more prominently as a forward, where he kicked 21 goals.
The versatile tall was reportedly the subject of some interest from Carlton during the trade period, but was always keen to stay at the Lions if he could get a two-year extension.
McGuane has also been in limbo for a number of weeks after expressing his interest in heading to the Lions.
However, with a number of the club's young players wanting to be traded, the club held off on signing McGuane until they had a better idea of available list positions.
The 26-year-old former Tiger has played 105 games and will jockey for a position at either end of the ground.
Lions general manager of football operations Dean Warren said Staker's role at the club both on and off field has been crucial.
"Brent provides a wealth of experience to our young group and is a fantastic character to have around the club," Warren said.
"He was particularly important this year in his ability to play a role both up forward and down back when required.
"He has had a tough time with injury over the past few years but his resilience and determination has paid off."
