GEELONG feels it deserves to host a home final against Fremantle at Simonds Stadium, despite strong opposition to the proposal.
If, as expected, they defeat the Brisbane Lions on Saturday afternoon, the second-placed Cats are set to face the third-placed Dockers in one of the two qualifying finals.
Cats CEO Brian Cook only became aware of the possibility of playing the game at Kardinia Park on Thursday.
If the game is in Geelong, it seems likely to be scheduled on Saturday at 3:40pm.
"It would be an unbelievable opportunity. I think a well-deserved opportunity," Cook told SEN radio on Saturday.
"I don't think there's been any club that's worked harder to get the stadium up to the level that we've got it."
The decision on where to host the game – either Etihad Stadium or Simonds Stadium – is likely to be made on Saturday evening or later on Sunday.
However, the AFL has assured Fremantle that a call is yet to be made, according to club president Steve Harris.
The Dockers argument for not playing the game at the Cattery is centered around the fact up to 12,000 people may miss out on seeing the game because of Geelong's lower seating capacity.
Simonds Stadium has a capacity of 33,500, while Etihad can fit in around 53,000 people.
Harris described the idea of opting for the smaller ground as "inconceivable" earlier this week.
But Cook says a game in Geelong would have far-reaching benefits, from an economic point of view.
"There could be no bigger sports event in Geelong, in my opinion, in its history," Cook said
"It's just an unbelievable possibility. People are really excited about it and if it does happen, it will be one of the biggest things ever in Geelong."
The AFL will announce the 2013 finals schedule on Sunday evening.
