Cox put pen to paper to a new one-year deal on Friday, and hasn't ruled out the prospect of playing on in 2015.
The 32-year-old has notched 270 games since being rookie-listed in 2000, and needs to appear in just seven more matches to surpass the club record 276 set by Jakovich between 1991-2004.
Cox, a six-time All-Australian, has enjoyed a strong 2013 campaign, but has been forced to shoulder most of the ruck work due to the lengthy injury absences of Nic Naitanui.
Nevertheless, Cox said it was an easy decision to play on next year.
"I don't think there was ever any doubt that I wanted to keep going," Cox told the club's website.
"But when you get to my age, it's a matter of 'can I still perform at the level I want to?'
"And then 'can my body allow me to do that?'
"If I can tick both of those boxes, and I still have a huge desire and passion to play good football for this footy club, then the decision at this time of the year was very easy."
Cox joins skipper Darren Glass as Eagles veterans who have signed on for next year.
But the careers of Adam Selwood and injury-plagued forward Mark Nicoski have come to an end, with the pair announcing their retirements on Thursday.
Doubt still surrounds the future of premiership wingman Andrew Embley, who indicated last month he was keen to play on but has been overlooked for selection in recent weeks.
Selwood hopes to play again this year before he hangs up the boots, but the 29-year-old failed to make the team for Saturday night's clash with Geelong at Patersons Stadium.
