The build-up to Ashley McGrath's 200th match was overshadowed by Simon Black, whose club record 320th game was marked by fans in the stands donning black clothing. However, neither Black nor St Kilda 250-gamers Nick Riewoldt and Nick dal Santo will have a memory to match the Lions forward, who marked just before the siren and then kicked the match-winner from 50 metres, sparking a roar the likes of which has not been heard at a Lions game since the glory days of a decade ago.
2. A little help from umpire Wenn
Facing a 40-point deficit five minutes into the last quarter and seemingly out of the contest, the Lions got a much-needed helping hand. Umpire Stuart Wenn inadvertently knocked Stevie Johnson's grubbing kick into the path of Daniel Rich, who fed Dayne Zorko for a long running goal that ignited the comeback. Few predicted Port Adelaide's upset of the Swans on Saturday but the Lions' win trumps it for sheer unbelievability. Victory was never on the cards for the home side until Wenn's unwitting intervention.
3. Stevie J in trouble again
Geelong talisman Steve Johnson could find himself treading a familiar path to the Tribunal after cleaning up Pearce Hanley with a heavy bump in the first quarter, though the tough Irishman returned before the first change. Johnson accepted a Level Two striking charge against Hayden Ballantyne during the pre-season, which kept him out of the Cats' season opener against Hawthorn. He will now be sweating over whether he plays in the rematch with the Hawks in round 15. The incident overshadowed Johnson's superb 31-possession, two-goal performance - which was in turn overshadowed by the Lions' late heroics. Coach Chris Scott refused to speculate on any possible punishment, saying he did not see the incident.
4. No jetlag for Jimmy
The decision to allow Jimmy Bartel to travel to the US during the bye week to watch the NBA finals in San Antonio was a hot topic pre-game. Would Bartel be selected against the Lions? Could he be perform to his usual standard? A team-high 10 disposals in the first quarter soon answered the question. Bartel finished the game with 31 possessions and 10 marks.
5. Moloney (sort of) makes amends
Brent Moloney let himself down with his 'karma is a bitch' tweet in the wake of Mark Neeld's sacking earlier this week, but he gained a measure of redemption with an outstanding second half against the Cats. The former Demon, who began his career at Geelong, equalled his career-best return up forward with three goals. He was particularly influential in the fourth quarter, racking up 12 disposals including a superb 60-metre goal from a clearance after latching onto Matthew Leuenberger's hit-out from the centre bounce.
