The AFL wishes to advise that two clubs today formally notified the AFL they would elect to activate one compensation selection each, received for losing a player to either the Gold Coast Suns or the GWS Giants during the expansion period, to be used at the 2013 NAB AFL Draft in November this year.
Clubs which had received compensation draft selections in return for having had an uncontracted player elect to join either the Gold Coast Football Club or the GWS Giants, or clubs which had traded for a compensation selection in the 2010, 2011 or 2012 AFL exchange periods, had until 2pm today to decide whether to activate those selections for this year’s draft.
The following selections have been activated for this year’s draft:
GWS Giants - mid round one selection (Compensation for the loss of Gary Ablett. Traded from the Geelong Cats to the Gold Coast Suns in the 2010 trade period; traded from the Gold Coast Suns to the GWS Giants in the 2011 trade period). To be taken in round one immediately after the selection of the ninth-placed club and before the selection of the eighth-placed club.
GC Suns – end round one selection (Compensation for the loss of Nathan Bock. Traded from the Adelaide Crows to Richmond in the 2010 trade period; traded from Richmond to the GC Suns in the 2011 trade period). To be taken at the end of round one immediately after the selection of the first-placed club.
The two clubs both have the right to on-trade these compensation selections to another club in the 2013 exchange period, but all these selections MUST be used at the 2012 NAB AFL Draft.
The following clubs today elected not to activate their compensation selections, which still can be used in any year covering the 2014 drafts (GC Suns picks) or the 2014–2015 drafts (GWS Giants picks):
GC Suns compensation picks still to be activated;
Geelong Cats - Gary Ablett - round one selection. (Traded to the GC Suns in 2012 trade period). Still to be activated by the Gold Coast Suns.
