CARLTON'S Irish import Zach Tuohy is seeking Australian citizenship as he contemplates remaining in his adopted country beyond his AFL career.

With both his playing contract and his visa expiring at the end of this season, Tuohy has applied for joint Australian and Irish citizen status to increase his life options.

"In the early days I always planned on going home (to Ireland after football), but the longer I stayed here the more and more I liked it," he told carltonfc.com.au.

"I still may go home, but instead of being in the position where it’s predetermined by having a visa, I’d rather look for citizenship and give myself the option that if I wanted to stay here at the end of it, I could."

Tuohy, who is in his fourth season with the Blues, says he feels comfortable and settled in Melbourne.

He is also looking increasingly comfortable on the field as a half-back/wingman, with the 23-year-old one of the Blues' best players in their 70-point NAB Cup win over Fremantle at Etihad Stadium last Saturday night.

Originally an international rookie selection in 2010, Tuohy has played all of his 30 AFL games in the past two seasons.
