Whitfield, a gifted midfielder and winger who was the top selection in the draft, is still working on developing the fitness level to compete regularly in senior football.
But he impressed during the NAB Cup and the 18-year-old feels he is ready for the real action of a clash with the Swans.
"Yeah I do," Whitfield told AFL.com.au. "I'm trying to work on my game, make sure I'm getting some inside ball as well as outside ball.
"I think I'm going to be playing in the midfield as well as out on the flanks and it would be a great opportunity to play in the Battle of the Bridge in round one up against the premiership side."
While Whitfield is right on schedule, Plowman has impressed all since his arrival in western Sydney.
A key defender in a side that badly needs help down back, the 192cm, 84kg Plowman is a certain starter in round one, according to coach Kevin Sheedy.
"Young Plowman will come into the side," Sheedy said on Fox Footy's AFL 360 program.
"He's a very good, strong player.
"We'll probably bring two first-gamers in I'd say (in round one) and over the next month we'll bring another one or two in also."
Jono O'Rourke, the No.2 selection in the draft, has been dealing with some hamstring issues, but some of the Giants' other draftees are set to contribute to the cause in the near future.
Aidan Corr, the 14th pick in the draft who recently extended his contract until the end of 2016, is one name that has regularly surfaced when young Giants impressing the club have been discussed.
"I'd absolutely love it if I get a chance," Whitfield said.
"But there's also a lot of other first-year players like Aidan Corr and Lachie Plowman who are a serious chance to play as well."
GWS vice-captain Tom Scully, himself a former No.1 pick, likes what he has seen from the youngsters.
"(Whitfield's) pre-season form has been outstanding and he's fit into the team really well," Scully said.
"We both play that wing role and we pair up a fair bit and I'm trying to teach him little things I've picked up over the years.
"He's still pretty lean and light, similar to when I first came in, but I think his footy smarts will get him out of a lot of trouble
"And Aidan Corr and Lachie Plowman have been really good as well. They really steady up our backline and will be valuable players into the future.
"I think we'll see a lot of action out of those guys this year."
