ALWYN Davey's career at Essendon is over, after the club cut the small forward on Wednesday.
The 29-year-old, who played 14 games in 2013, struggled for form throughout the year.
He was made aware of the decision upon returning to Australia after playing for the Indigenous All Stars on their tour of Ireland.
Davey's last game was his 100th for the club, and it came in the final round of 2013.
Essendon list manager Adrian Dodoro said it was a hard call to make.
"As a highly respected member of the Essendon playing group it’s sad to see 'Froggy' depart the club,” Dodoro said
"Unfortunately at this time of year we have to make tough decisions about our playing list and this is one of them.
"To play 100 games and kick 120 goals over seven seasons as a small forward is a terrific effort and we wish Alwyn and his young family all the best for the future."
Davey had a late start to his AFL career, making his debut as a 22-year-old after being drafted from SANFL club South Adelaide.
He was one of several small forwards in the middle of the last decade who helped shape the role for future years, with his tackling pressure and pace around the forward line important.
But a knee reconstruction and several serious arm injuries limited his effectiveness.
