Ballantyne will return in Friday night's home clash with Essendon after serving his one-match ban for striking West Coast's Scott Selwood off the ball.
The 25-year-old was also suspended twice last season for similar incidents.
Mayne said Ballantyne was merely trying to protect Nat Fyfe from a tagger when he crossed the line a fortnight ago, and urged the 174cm forward to maintain his up-tempo style of play.
"We believe Hayden plays his best footy when he comes close to the edge," Mayne said on Monday.
"We felt he was looking after one of our players. That's what we do. We like to help out our teammates.
"We're 22 brothers out there looking after each other, and he's definitely one that always cares about his mates.
"He's looking strong, fit and ready to go."
Fremantle and Essendon are both unbeaten after two rounds, with the Bombers coming off a 148-point mauling of Melbourne on Saturday.
The Dockers have been equally impressive in posting comfortable wins over West Coast and the Bulldogs, and Mayne said the team was determined to keep the good form going in the Friday night blockbuster.
"Everyone in Australia is watching you," Mayne said. "It's a big stage, and that's what we are starting to get ourselves accustomed to."
