North Melbourne announced on its website on Tuesday that Swallow had not flown out for the US with the rest of his teammates last Friday after the club decided he would be better served continuing his rehabilitation in Melbourne.
Swallow's original rehabilitation program had involved him taking part in the Utah camp, but North said his withdrawal was "far from a setback".
"Andrew experienced some soreness so we determined it was best to re-scan and review the injury with his specialist," North club doctor Andy McMahon said.
"The results of the scan this week were extremely good and we will continue to monitor his situation day by day and assess the best way forward for Andrew.
"We feel the best place for his rehabilitation program is back here in Melbourne for the time being."
Swallow attended training with North's VFL affiliate Werribee on Monday night.
North coach Brad Scott said last month Swallow might not return to playing until the second half of the 2014 season.
