BRISBANE Lions captain Emma Zielke is still in hospital in Melbourne with broken ribs and a punctured lung, suffered during Saturday night's NAB AFL Women’s state of origin match.
Zielke was the victim of friendly fire in the third term, accidentally getting kneed in the side by teammate Bianca Jakobsson in a marking contest.
After a lengthy delay during which she struggled to get off the ground, she was rushed straight to hospital.
Lions women's team CEO Breanna Brock confirmed the extent of the injury on Monday.
"[Zielke]…will stay [in hospital] a further night to be reassessed again on Tuesday morning," Brock said.
"When she is released and comfortable, the AFL will work with her to organise some travel plans."
Doctors have advised Zielke she won’t be able to fly for some time and will likely have to be driven home.
With Zielke's state league season with Coorparoo already over, she will look to return to full fitness before the AFLW pre-season commences in mid-November.
Melbourne rookie Tim Smith suffered a similar injury early in the AFL season and missed six weeks.
