AS THE clock ticks towards a review into Justin Leppitsch's coaching tenure at the Brisbane Lions, his key backer appears to have again softened his once unshakable support.

Although Leppitsch is contracted until the end of 2017, pressure has mounted as the year has worn on with the Lions' horror 3-17 record.

But the one constant in Leppitsch's corner has been Lions deputy chairman Leigh Matthews.

Matthews rightfully guaranteed the coach would see out his contract, however as the losses have mounted and the questions have continued to come, the Hall of Fame Legend has ever so slightly softened his stance. 

Just last month, prior to a drubbing from Greater Western Sydney, Matthews quashed speculation the board had decided to sack Leppitsch at season's end, telling 3AW he would "coach until we say he is not going to be coach and he is contracted for ’17."

Now, speaking on his regular spot on Adelaide's 5AA radio station on Wednesday night, Matthews said his primary focus was the health of the club, not an individual.

When asked if his allegiances lay with Leppitsch, Matthews was firm.

"No, no, no, no, my flag is next to the Brisbane Lions' best interest," he said.

"Everyone that knows me, knows that.

"Let's not kid ourselves here. Whatever happens in my footy life, the team comes first - always has, always will.

"If you're asking that specific question of my philosophy about football clubs, let's not kid ourselves, that's the case." 

Leppitsch had his contract extended until the end of 2017 on the eve of the season, but has won just three games this year, bringing mountains of pressure.

Lions chairman Bob Sharpless confirmed earlier this month that Leppitsch's job would be reviewed at the end of the season.

When asked if Leppitsch would stay on, Matthews was blunt.

"I know nothing."
