Over the next few weeks, Collingwoodfc.com.au will be publishing excerpts from the 2010 Yearbook.

Sometimes awards tell a tale, especially in the compilation of individual honours that assisted team success. Such was the 2010 season of Alan Didak.

A fourth-placing in the best-and-fairest, in a premiership year, is fitting acknowledgment for a player at the peak of his powers. Didak was at his breathtaking best this season, being a worthy recipient of the JF McHale Trophy in a year in which he also won his first Gordon Coventry Trophy as the club’s leading goalkicker with 41, and earned his second All-Australian guernsey.?

The 27-year-old, who won the Copeland Trophy in 2006 and was fifth in 2009, spent most of this season terrorising opposition half-back flankers, with occasional stints in the midfield, and arguably took his game to a whole new level. He was third at the club for total kicks, fourth for both overall disposals and contested disposals, and also had more score assists than any other Magpie.

The premiership that Didak has been craving almost became unreachable when he severely injured his pectoral muscle on the eve of the finals, potentially robbing him of a chance to shine on the September stage, but also severely denting Collingwood’s chances of going all the way. Yet he courageously carried the injury through the finals campaign and, with a goal in each grand final - including the unforgettable smother and snap in the third term of the replay - Didak stamped himself on the two contests that capped the club’s drive to the flag.?

“This is all I’ve wanted. To win the flag with this group of guys, at this great club, is the ultimate,” Didak said after the grand final replay triumph.
