BRISBANE Lions triple premiership player Shaun Hart has put his hand up to be involved with the AFL's Gold Coast vision.
Speculation surrounding who will coach the AFL's 17th side has intensified in the wake of Michael Voss' decision to take up an assistant coaching role with West Coast, and Hart says he would relish the chance to further develop his coaching skills in a supporting role with the new team.
Hart, who this year took the coaching reins of AFL Queensland state league side Broadbeach, said bringing another AFL club into the Queensland market would be a challenge but he would be keen to broaden his coaching horizons with the new club.
"I think it's a great thing, love the whole idea and can't wait for it to happen," he said.
"Developmental coaching, whatever opportunities would come up, I'd certainly be interested, and anything in the coaching realm for me would be terrific.
"But again, I've just got to wait on that and see how it proceeds and who gets involved and who else they're looking for to join the team."
Hart said the club would have to prove itself in on-field performances to ensure financial viability into the future.
"I think you've got to have some sort of level of success within a period of time before you can expect to meet the demands financially of an AFL football side," he said.
"I think the challenge initially will be to raise the sort of money on the Coast.
"Two teams in not a huge market – that would become a really big challenge and maybe the Gold Coast might succeed and take a fair bit away from the Lions, which wouldn't be a good thing, I don't think."
The Gold Coast side plans to debut in the TAC Cup competition in 2009, bypassing this year's NAB AFL Draft by offering the best Queensland teenagers contracts to pre-sign with the club.
Hart believes that having a second Queensland team to tap into the local talent can help the long-term sustainability of the League's northern vision.
"We've got a lot of talent rising up in Queensland. Some guys who you think, 'Gee, I don't know how he missed out on AFL'," Hart said.
"But with another team or two in the competition, these guys probably won't miss out, they'll get an opportunity. So that's a bonus."
