NEW BRISBANE Lion Brent Moloney says he was chasing "a fresh start" after leaving Melbourne via the Gillette AFL Free Agency period.
Moloney was unveiled as a Lion in Melbourne on Friday and the midfielder said he could add much-needed experience to the Lions' on-ball brigade, in particular at clearances.
"They've got some good young players in (Daniel) Rich, (Tom) Rockliff and (Jack) Redden and the old head Simon Black up there," Moloney said.
"I’m looking forward to learning off him (Black), and just really excited.
"I think they've got a good young list, as well as some older players in Black and Jonathan Brown, so I think there's a good mix there."
The Demons did not match the Lions' offer to the restricted free agent and he was free to join the club on a two-year deal after passing a medical examination in Brisbane on Thursday.
Moloney revealed there were three or four clubs vying for his services, but in the end he decided the Lions were the club that was "right for him".
The 28-year-old midfielder believes he still has plenty to offer the Lions.
"I think I've got three, hopefully four years, of footy left in me and hopefully I can get some success up there."
Moloney played 15 games for the Demons in what he admitted was a "frustrating" 2012 season after winning the club's best and fairest award in 2011.
"I spoke to Mark Neeld after the season and expressed that I wanted to leave and felt it was time for a fresh start and he was really respectful in what I wanted," Moloney said.
"I just felt I wasn't going to be part of that next premiership plan."
But Moloney, who has played 145 games, said he was ready to move on and was eagerly anticipating joining his new club.
"My body's fine … and I'm really looking forward to a big pre-season," he said.
Moloney will join his new teammates on their camp in Arizona.
