Hope you all had fun on the school holidays and got to have plenty of kicks of the footy with your mates.
Today I wanted to talk to you about self control. It is an important part of our every day lives, just as it is out on the football field.
Every year there are isolated incidents where guys receive some hefty suspensions, and much of it has to do with a lack of self control.
It is important to go out into the heat of battle super competitive and with a strong frame of mind.
But you also have to be conscious of keeping your emotions in check, no matter what the situation.
The instant you lose self control, you affect your teammates and your club.
It’s one of those things that we often talk about in this column that applies at all levels of footy and not just in the AFL.
Losing your self control in the under 10s or 12s is just as harmful to you team as it is in men’s (or women’s for that matter) football.
Playing team sport like footy is so good because it demands you learn from an early age about getting better at things like this if they are an issue.
It is character-building and you can take that into other aspects of your life in a positive way.
If you learn to deal with pressure and quick decision making and maintaining your self control at football, it only figures that you will do the same at school and other places.
Somewhere that is ‘out of control’ – and I mean that in a good way – is Movie World.
We have a Brisbane Lions Family Day at the theme park on Sunday morning, and a number of Lions players will be in attendance.
There are great discounts for Brisbane Lions members, and if you book your ticket through the club you get the chance to go on one of the rides with a Lions player.
But don’t forget to first get along to the Gabba on Saturday night and cheer us on against the West Coast Eagles.
It will be great to be back at our home ground with all our Lions fans behind us again.
Until next week.
