The Peter Mac Cup was introduced in 1993 and is designed to raise funds and awareness of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Each year one of the matches between Carlton and Collingwood is selected as the Peter Mac Cup game (Carlton home game in even years and Collingwood home game in odd years). The two Clubs work with Peter Mac, the MCG and other organisations to promote the game and assist with the awareness and fund raising activities.

Over $½ million has been raised for Peter Mac since 1993.

The first game in round 6 1993 was a Carlton home game and the Peter Mac Cup was won by Collingwood.

Peter Mac is the only specialist cancer hospital in Australia.
Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre is a comprehensive specialist oncology centre providing cancer services at the central site in Melbourne and through external clinics and satellites throughout Victoria.
Cancer touches almost all Australians either directly or indirectly sometime in our lives.  It is a common problem, accounting for 30 percent of all male deaths and 25 percent of female deaths.

Today, thanks to the efforts of such institutions as Peter Mac, more than half of those diagnosed with cancer will have their disease brought under control, and many will be successfully treated.

This significant progress is due to the dedication of thousands of people – physicians and nurses who care for patients, researchers who explore the causes of cancer, and volunteers and benefactors who contribute so that others can hope for recovery.

We continue the work of Sir Peter MacCallum whose energy and vision saw Australia’s first Cancer Institute established over 50 years ago.

Sir Peter MacCallum believed that nothing but the best is good enough in the treatment of cancer. We continue to strive to maintain his dream.

Research at Peter Mac
Peter Mac houses the largest cancer research group in Australia and covers laboratory based studies into the fundamental mechanisms of cell growth, translational studies that seek more accurate cancer diagnosis, clinical trials with novel treatments and research aimed to improve supportive care.

The proximity of clinicians and scientists provides unique opportunities for medical advances to be moved from the “bench to the bedside” and for clinically oriented questions to guide our research agenda. Our research programs are having a profound impact on the understanding of cancer biology and are leading to more effective and individualised care.
