CARLTON full forward Brendan Fevola has been caught exceeding the speed limit in a 40km/h school zone this afternoon in suburban Melbourne.

The club said in a statement that Fevola was driving on the Nepean Highway in Elsternwick when he committed the breach at 2.50pm.

"While Brendan was unaware that the reduced limit applied on that particular stretch of road during that time of day he is nonetheless remorseful for his actions," the club statement said.

Fevola informed the club immediately and was keen for his error to be used as a means of reinforcing the message of road safety in the community.

"I appreciate that there can be no excuse for going over the limit," Fevola said.

"It’s a wake-up call for me and hopefully a reminder to everyone that the speed limit must be observed, particularly at selected times in and around school areas."
