HAWTHORN coach Alastair Clarkson says his side won’t be easing off with one round to go and is determined to take its winning form deep into September.
Hawthorn crushed the West Coast Eagles by 71 points at Subiaco Oval, with Lance Franklin kicking four goals to remain on 98 goals for the season.
Despite the focus on Franklin, the Hawks found nine individual goal-kickers, with makeshift forward Campbell Brown kicking four goals and Jarryd Roughead returning to form with some strong marking and two goals of his own.
Despite a first week final against the Western Bulldogs already being a certainty, Clarkson says the Hawks will be going flat-out against Carlton next week.
“We’ll select the best side that we’ve got available,” Clarkson said.
“I think that good form is needed to go into September and we won’t be resting any guys next week unless the medicos tell us that that’s what’s needed. But we’ve come out of (today’s game) pretty fresh.
“We go into the finals in a top-four spot which gives us the double chance. So it means that we can approach the finals series with a fair amount of confidence.
“And we want to go as deep as we possibly can into September and we think that when we play our best footy we can acquit ourselves well against any opposition.”
Hawthorn skipper Sam Mitchell and forward Mark Williams were both involved in incidents involving high contact on Sunday, but Clarkson said the Hawks would not be stepping back from their aggressive approach.
“It’s not ideal, that situation where you’ve got guys with carry-over points,” he said.
“But we play in a very volatile and aggressive sport and we ask our players to play tough, hard footy.
“Sometimes that drags them a little bit close to the line and so they’re vulnerable to reports and suspensions but over the course of the last 10 to 12 weeks our players have been pretty good.”
Clarkson said the hype surrounding Franklin’s milestone had not been a distraction for the club.
“It’s not a big focus for us. It will happen when it happens and it’s more than likely going to happen next week now,” he said.
“Whoever gets on the end of the ball forward, they’ve got the responsibility of kicking the goal. When we have a spread of goalkickers we know we’re a much better side.”
Clarkson said Campbell Brown could be a September wildcard for the Hawks as a forward.
“We’ve looked a lot of other sides, not just opponents that we’ve played in the present era but previous sides that were very successful in September and they’ve had a number of players that have been able to float from forward to back.
“Campbell Brown, early in his career, played a fair amount of his footy up forward. He’s such an aggressive competitor and just got such great leg speed. We’ll swing him from forward to back depending on the needs of the side in that particular week.”
