The Brisbane Lions are three weeks into their gruelling pre-season program which has so far incorporated a range of physical training activities including swimming, weights, boxing and even wrestling.

A number of Lions players will witness wrestling of a different kind this Thursday night when they attend the Hulkamania - Let the Battle Begin event at the Brisbane Exhibition Centre in Boondall.

Troy Selwood is one Lions player who can’t wait to see wrestling legend Hulk Hogan in the flesh when his first ever Australian tour hits Brisbane.

“All of us Selwood boys (Adam, Troy, Joel and Scott) were huge wrestling fans growing up,” Selwood said.

“In fact, one of my earliest wrestling memories was when Hulk Hogan won the 1991 Royal Rumble.”

“I also remember when he lost his heavyweight title match against The Ultimate Warrior,” he said. “I was so shattered afterwards I almost cried.”

Hogan is one of the biggest names in wrestling history having held almost every title in the industry. He cuts an imposing figure, standing at 6’7 (approximately 201cm) and weighing in at 280lbs (127.3kg). Comparatively, he is around 6cm taller and 23kg heavier than powerhouse Lions Captain Jonathan Brown.

While most of what goes on inside the ring this Thursday night will not be applicable to Australian Rules football, the Lions players are looking forward to simply watching some big name athletes in action.

“There are a fair few boys at the Club who are right into the wrestling and going along to Hulkamania tomorrow night,” Selwood said.

“It’s great because we don’t get to see much of it nowadays considering we’re always so busy throughout the season.”

Hogan’s Hulkamania event includes a host of other wrestling icons including Ric Flair and Brutus ‘The Barber’ Beefcake.
