ST KILDA star Brendon Goddard isn't buying into the doom and gloom surrounding the club's flag chances in 2011 after a disappointing start to the season.

After taking part in the past two grand finals, plus a replay, the Saints' first three premiership matches of 2011 have yielded a one-point loss to Geelong, a draw with Richmond and a 52-point loss to Essendon.

In the immediate aftermath of the drubbing at the hands of the Bombers, St Kilda coach Ross Lyon pondered whether his side's premiership window had closed and a fresh start was needed.

The frank admission sparked a series of front page stories and opinion columns declaring the Saints' season dead in the water, which Goddard feels was an over-reaction.

"We've obviously struggled. I don't think you have to be Einstein to figure out that," Goddard said.

"I think last week we really let ourselves down, but I don't think we were too far away in the first two games.

"The good thing about this is that we have been in this position before and managed to come out the end in pretty good shape.

"We're pretty confident we can bounce back."

The Saints started the 2008 season in similarly indifferent form, winning just four of their first nine games, before rattling home to mount a finals campaign that ended with a preliminary final loss to eventual premier Hawthorn.

Despite making the semi-final stage of the NAB Cup, Lyon voiced his concerns over his side's performances before the season-proper began with Goddard, one of many players who have since struggled to find peak form, proving the coach's fears well founded.

St Kilda has a timely bye in round four to regroup, but Goddard said the Saints shouldn't try to reinvent the wheel as they attempt to get their season back on track.

"I think we just need to strip it back and focus on what made us a good footy team in the past two or three years," he said.

"We've got to stick to the foundations and basics, as clichéd as it sounds, but I think we'll be fine."
