POWER coach Mark Williams has pencilled in Saturday afternoon’s clash with Richmond at AAMI Stadium as a “must-win” for his club.

Port Adelaide has claimed just one win at home this season; a statistic that must change this week if the Power are to remain in the finals hunt.

The Power are now two wins behind eighth-placed Carlton and will need to win at least seven of their remaining 10 games, including Saturday’s fixture with Richmond, to contest the finals.

“We saw some little things on the weekend that we were quite satisfied with. Now we’re coming up to playing another home game and it’s about time our club stood up and won at home,” Williams said.

“We’re calling on all our supporters to get there. This is a game we’re putting on the map as a must-win. We’ve had a fantastic record at AAMI in the past, but this year it has certainly been disappointing.”

Williams experimented with a few changes during the final quarter against Geelong, including throwing Robbie Gray into the midfield, but he said selection this week would still be made on the basis of making finals.

On Monday, Williams was, again, quizzed on the fitness of Adam Thomson and why the talented youngster was given clearance to play for Sturt, but not the Power.

Williams revealed that Thompson, who experienced groin soreness after the loss to Hawthorn, had hardly trained last week and was therefore considered to need another game in the SANFL to gain match fitness. Thompson had 15 possessions and a goal for the Double Blues on Sunday, but it is unlikely that form will warrant a recall this week.

Chad Cornes did, however, cement his spot in the side on Sunday with a satisfactory second half ensuring he will be picked again this week, but Justin Westhoff’s form remains a problem for Williams.

“I thought Chad’s last quarter was his best for a long time and it was in the back line, so it might mean we play him back there,” Williams said.

“We’ve spent a long time talking about Westy [Westhoff]. He does so many good things and his possessions and marking is right up there with last year, but his kicking for goal isn’t, so that’s the one area that’s down.

“Do you drop him and let him have a few weeks with Centrals to get some real confidence back? Or, do we keep persisting with him because we know he’s our future?

“We will do the best thing for him.”
