CARLTON coach Brett Ratten says he won't approach AFL director of umpiring Jeff Gieschen about a final quarter decision made by field umpire Ray Chamberlain which resulted in back-to-back goals to Adelaide.

Chamberlain awarded a free kick to Adelaide's Richard Douglas after Carlton defender Jarrad Waite punched the ball into the crowd as a Bernie Vince goal was sailing through for the Crows.

Once Vince's goal had been given the all clear, Chamberlain then immediately awarded the free kick to Douglas who kicked truly to give the Crows a 31-point lead at the 18-minute mark of the final term, ending any chance of a Carlton comeback.

But Ratten said he would not seek clarification from Gieschen about the incident.

"I won't talk to Jeff. I think the umpires have got a tough job each week and they call it as they see it and you get the good with the bad," Ratten said.

"It's like players. Players make mistakes and I make mistakes and everyone makes mistakes, so I won't be ringing up Jeff over petty little things that happen in the game.

"We've got bigger issues to fix and that was maybe the stoppages in the last quarter and things like that."

Although Ratten did not want to take the matter further, he said it was a "big penalty".
"I haven't seen it been given at the goal square, [although] I've seen it been given at the centre of the ground", Ratten said.

"I thought a free kick in the middle of the ground might've been a fair result on that one."
