THE BEST friend of a teenage girl who was allegedly raped by North Melbourne player Majak Daw says her friend was "hysterical" when she found him on top of her.
The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told Melbourne Magistrates Court that she discovered Daw lying on top of her 16-year-old friend when she went to look for her at a party.
Giving evidence on Monday, the witness said she was alarmed when she heard her friend crying as she searched for her outside the house party in Melbourne's west in March 2007.
"She was lying on the ground," the witness said. "He had one hand on her chest."
She added it appeared that Daw, who was not wearing his pants, was "restraining" her and they appeared to be in the "missionary position".
Holding back tears the woman, who said she was aged 15 at the time of the alleged incident, said: "She was kicking her legs. I feel like her legs were restrained as well. She was squirming, if you like."
She said Daw, now 23, moved off her friend when he saw she was there and left the creek-side area in Altona Meadows.
Although it was dark, the witness said she was able to see what was happening, and remembered the incident vividly despite the lapse in time.
Asked if her friend appeared drunk, she said: "Nah, hysterical".
She told the court that she tried to comfort the girl but could not get much sense out of her as she was so upset.
She said that although she later questioned her about what happened, she did not want to talk about it.
The alleged victim also gave evidence on Monday but journalists were not allowed to listen in.
Daw, who is facing three counts of rape, sat in the court room during the committal hearing, which is set to last two more days.
The footballer was the first Sudan-born player to reach the AFL and has played 14 games since joining North Melbourne as a rookie in 2009.
The club says it will support him and that he will remain available to play for the Kangaroos' AFL and VFL sides.
The AFL has backed the club's decision but has restricted Daw, who is one of the League's multicultural ambassadors, from making promotional appearances.
The hearing was adjourned to Tuesday.
