BERNIE Vince's bad record has come back to bite him, with the Melbourne midfielder slapped with a two-match ban for striking as the Match Review Panel fined Richmond superstar Dustin Martin twice.

While Martin escaped suspension for making unreasonable and unnecessary contact to the face of Nick Robertson, he will be walking a tightrope for the rest of the season after being fined for separate incidents by the MRP.

The midfielder will be suspended for one match – and ruled ineligible for the Brownlow Medal – if he commits a third low-level offence this season after also being charged with rough conduct on Brisbane Lion Lewis Taylor on Monday.

Martin was fined $1000 for his bumping Taylor behind play in the opening minute of the game, and $1500 for making "unreasonable and unnecessary contact with an open hand" to Robertson's face.

The MRP graded the second offence as careless conduct with low impact to the head after deciding the open-handed action was not a strike but remained significant enough to draw a charge.

Vince was charged with intentionally striking Adelaide gun Eddie Betts after making high contact with the small forward's face with his elbow in Saturday night's clash in Darwin.

The incident was graded as intentional conduct with low impact to the head, meaning Vince could normally accept a one-match base sanction with an early guilty plea.

But his poor record of two matches suspended in the past two seasons – for striking Nathan Wright and Jamie Macmillan – means he must accept an extra one-game penalty, taking his total ban to two matches.

The rugged Demon accepted his sanction on Tuesday morning, as he would have risked a three-game ban if he had chosen to take the matter to the Tribunal.

His victim expressed surprise on radio station FIVEAA that Vince had been given such a stiff penalty.

"I didn't expect it to be two weeks," Betts said on Tuesday.

"C'mon. My jaw is fine.

"I think it's because he's got a bad (reputation) of doing that.

"I don't think he should've got two weeks."

Vince's suspension continues an undisciplined run for the Demons, whose players have now been suspended for a total of 14 matches this season – more than any other club.

Vince was also fined $1000 for making forceful front-on contact on Richard Douglas.

Robertson, meanwhile, accepted a one-match ban for headbutting Tigers captain Trent Cotchin, with the incident graded intentional conduct with low impact to the head.

Robertson was also charged with intentionally kneeing Martin, drawing a $1500 fine for the incident, which was graded as low impact and is the Lion's second offence this season.

The MRP deemed a separate kneeing incident, on Cotchin, was of insufficient force to justify a charge.

Port Adelaide tall Jackson Trengove copped a $1000 fine for striking opponent Scott Thompson behind the play in Saturday's clash at Adelaide Oval.

Trengove threw an elbow back at Thompson as the pair grappled in the forward line, catching him high with the incident graded careless conduct with low impact to the head.

Adelaide skipper Taylor Walker accepted a $1000 fine after he was charged with striking Jordan Lewis in the first quarter of Saturday night's clash.
