Callan Ward: Independence at last
Interstate trips and an 18th birthday has kept Callan Ward busy in the past month
As an emergency for last Sunday’s game against Sydney I was lucky enough to be able to travel with the team for the game at the SCG.
Even though I didn’t play it was still a great experience. I don’t think there is any rush for me to play in the seniors but just to be part of an interstate trip with the senior players and to see how they go about it was important for my development.
I spoke to a couple of the assistant coaches, Leon Cameron and Wayne Campbell, and asked who I should keep an eye on during the game. They both said Adam Cooney and it was good they did because he played really well. His work ethic is very high and it makes me realise just how hard I need to work if I want to play senior football in the future.
You could see how much another win meant to everyone in the rooms after the game. Rodney Eade asked me to join in and sing the club song. It’s the first time I’ve tried to sing it and I got all of the words right! It was the perfect way to finish the trip away with the senior players.
I had a personal celebration of my own recently too. I turned 18 last month and got my driver’s licence. I have a typical P-plater car, a Holden and am enjoying my own freedom.
I have always relied on my parents, friends and taxi’s to get around. It’s good now because I can get myself to and from school and to training without having to rely on anyone else for it. Having my own independence makes life so much easier. I guess now it’s my turn to give my family and friends a lift around town.
