WEST Coast champion Josh Kennedy looks set to shelve retirement plans and play on in 2021.

This year's Coleman Medal leader entered the season viewing it likely as his last at AFL level.

However after a slow start in the Eagles' sluggish opening to their campaign, Kennedy has roared back into form and leads the competition's goal kicking table with 22 majors to his name. 

The 2018 premiership forward has booted 15 goals in the Eagles' past three games, including a season-high haul of seven against Collingwood, and talks have started between his manager Wayne Loxley and the Eagles on a one-year extension.

"I've had some initial discussions with the club and they're now saying to me that they're keen to discuss extending for next year," Loxley told AFL.com.au.

"We haven't done anything yet. There's interest from both parties in continuing at this stage that's for sure.

"He said 'Let's see how the year goes' with his body and, touch wood at this stage, his body is good. And unless something changes drastically, which I'm sure it won't, he's very open and receptive to [playing next year] as well.

"At this stage and all things being equal, both the club and he are both keen to continue on for another year."

Kennedy, who will turn 33 later this month, kicked only six goals in the opening five rounds of this season before being a key factor in the Eagles' run of five consecutive wins.

He is aiming to become a three-time Coleman medallist this season.

The three-time Virgin Australia All-Australian forward is West Coast's all-time leading goalkicker after joining the club after two years at Carlton, who traded him back to Western Australia as part of the deal to land former Eagle Chris Judd.

Eagles premiership skipper Shannon Hurn is also out of contract at the end of this season, while gun midfielder Andrew Gaff can activate the final four years of his contract to stick with the Eagles beyond this season.
