Also known as ‘Hutto’, ‘Mutton’ and more recently ‘Deborah’, Matt Hutton is North Melbourne’s latest signing.

The exciting 18-year-old was born in Perth and was recently offered a scholarship from North via the AFL’s New South Wales Scholarship Program.

“Obviously I was really excited to have the spot because it’s a big opportunity. I’m really looking forward to doing all the hard work and making the most of it,” Hutton told kangaroos.com.au.

“My dad played footy in Western Australia but then we moved with his work in 2000 and I’ve been playing in Sydney ever since. Sydney is pretty much my home now.”

Hutton was first spotted by North Melbourne recruiting staff in Coffs Harbour during the U18 NSW State Zone Trials. Playing for the Starz, Hutton stood out from the pack.

“Matt is a 183cm and 78kg mid-sized defender that is good overhead, runs the lines well and has an outstanding character and work-ethic. He’s had a pre-season with the Calder Cannons and we think he has a great deal of potential,” commented North Talent Coordinator James Driscoll.

After his two week training stint with the Kangaroos, Hutton will venture back to Sydney and play for GWS in the TAC Cup.

“I’m just loving it - everyone at North has made me feel a part of the group and not just tacked on the end. I get to Arden Street early and I don’t want to leave at the end of the day,” Hutton added.

“Being able to sit in on all the meetings including line group meetings and match meetings and just being out on the field with the boys is amazing. I have a lot to take back home now and use to my advantage.”

Hutton is hoping to play with the NSW/ACT U18 Rams side during the National Championships starting in May.
