CHRIS Mayne will spend Sunday night in hospital, having suffered a suspected fractured cheekbone following a bruising collision with Patrick Cripps during Collingwood's stirring victory over Carlton on Sunday.

Mayne braced to tackle Cripps in a crucial contest in the fourth quarter, but was collected by the point of the Blues co-captain's shoulder and walked from the field aided by club medics.

He immediately had a bruise developing on his right cheekbone, with Magpies coach Nathan Buckley praising the manner in which Mayne had put his body on the line for the team over the past fortnight.

"He's going to hospital," Buckley said.

"He's probably got a fractured cheekbone, that's the early diagnosis, and he was knocked out.

"That's the second week in a row that we've been out here and a contest of his has been really crucial in the flow of the game. The bloke continues to put his body on the line and his teammates love him.

"He's not in a great way at the moment, so he's a sore boy."

Carlton had led by 10 points midway through the third quarter, but was completely overrun by Collingwood and failed to register a single goal throughout the entirety of the second half as it fell to a 24-point defeat.

It leaves the Blues facing an uphill battle to qualify for the finals, with coach David Teague lamenting the manner in which his side failed to produce a consistent performance throughout the game.

"It's a tough one to swallow, full stop," Teague said.

"We didn't play our way for four quarters and that's what we came here to do. We saw some signs early that were good, but it shows that we've got a lot of improvement still to go.

"Our ability to maintain that, be consistent with that and make the most of it when we are on top in the contest … we need to make sure we are making the most of it in front of the scoreboard."
