In summary
West Coast spotted the obvious value in former Collingwood forward Brad Dick, who had been training across town with Fremantle. Making the 23-year-old even more attractive to the Eagles was his proven record playing as a goalsneak, with the club searching for a player to step up in that role. Young forward Simon Tunbridge shapes as a potential steal after leaving GWS citing homesickness, while teenagers Michael Mascoulis and Callum Papertalk could add pace to the midfield.

What the recruiter said
"With the rookie draft there's obviously some selections that may be classed as a bit more speculative, so our plan going in was to identify the players we thought had the most talent and were some chance of coming through the system and being senior players. Brad Dick has obviously played some pretty good AFL footy, albeit he's had some injuries and will be out for a little while. He's one where we thought he's a proven performer at the level, so we'll pop him on and try and get his body right. Brad is proven in that [small forward] role." - West Coast national recruiting manager Rohan O'Brien

NAB AFL ROOKIE DRAFT

Pick 15: Michael Mascoulis, Northern Knights

DOB: 27/1/93
Height: 185cm
Weight: 76kg
O'Brien says: "Michael missed three months of footy this year after suffering a few hamstring injuries, so he didn't play in the under-18 championships, but he's got some quality. He's a left-footed winger with good skills and he's a nice size, so he's maybe a little bit different to what we've got on our list currently."

Pick 33: Callum Papertalk, East Fremantle

DOB: 12/8/92
Height: 185cm
Weight: 78kg
O'Brien says: "He plays mainly half-forward and goes through the middle a little bit and we think he's got a fair bit of improvement left in him. He's quite a powerful boy with good pace, so we're hoping that coming into the system and training up a bit, he'll have a good upside."

Pick 51: Simon Tunbridge, Greater Western Sydney
DOB: 1/4/93
Height: 193cm
Weight: 89kg
O'Brien says: "Simon had some homesickness and struggled to cope with the GWS move after being taken as one of the 17-year-old pre-selections, so he came home at the end of this year. We think he's a player of really good talent, kicks the ball very well and can play at either end. Clubs wouldn't have seen him as being available as he was tied up with GWS this year and he really only came up at the end of the year. We think he's pretty talented."

Pick 68: Brad Dick, Collingwood
DOB: 25/7/88
Height: 181cm
Weight: 81kg
O'Brien says: "Brad is a proven performer at AFL level, albeit he's had his share of bad luck with injuries - knees and shoulders. He's played very well for Collingwood when he's been up and going and in terms of his talent we thought it was worth getting him in the system. Hopefully we can get a player out of it."
