Ormeau Wants a Piece of the Action
AFL is continuing to boom on the Gold Coast with another junior club taking shape at Ormeau.
The Ormeau Bulldogs have recently formed a committee and are running an AFL session for five to eight year olds on Tuesday afternoons from 3.30 to 4.30 at Canowindra Oval, Ormeau.
According to Ormeau Bulldogs President Tony Brabazon, there is already 40 kids registered and all have a great time each week.
“We run our sessions in three stages, with a warm up, followed by a skill session and then into a game to finish up,” said Mr Brabazon.
Omeau currently caters for six, seven and eight year olds where the focus is on fun and safety. The rules are modified with no contact and every one gets a run in the defence, midfield and forward line.
There are already 11 junior clubs on the Gold Coast stretching from Tweed-Coolangatta right through to Coomera. Ormeau are very confident that they will register as a club with AFL Gold Coast and become eligible to play in the Gold Coast Juniors League in 2009.
“The committee is doing a wonderful job at Ormeau and they already have significant numbers. We would hope, that they will be able to enter into the Under 8s Gold Coast league next season and maybe even some other age groups as well in the near future,” said AFL Gold Coast Juniors Administration Manager Jenny Webber.
“They are introducing AFL to Ormeau at this stage and any of the older kids can play with Coomera. Then as the Ormeau club grows they will be able to fit straight into the new Bulldogs teams as it eventuates,” Webber went on to say.
Ormeau is one of the fastest growing areas in Queensland and a new primary school is opening up at the start of next year.
Cupania Norfolk Village State School Principle Chris Capra is already aware of the new club and its possibilities for his new students.
“Members of our parents association have already informed me of the new club, we have a great oval that is fully turfed so I can’t think of any reason why we wouldn’t introduce AFL to our students,” said Mr Capra.
The Ormeau Bulldogs finish up for the year with a sausage sizzle on December 9 and everyone is welcome to attend. Sign up’s for the following year are on February 8 at every club throughout the Gold Coast.
Ormeau are inviting every student to get involved and play Australia’s favourite sport.
