Each year the AIS Director offers AIS/AFL Academy scholarships to thirty young athletes who are entering the last 12-months of their junior football development.

The criterion used for the selection of athletes includes:

1. Performances at club, school and regional football in the previous year.
2. State representation at the National’s AFL U16 or U18 Championships.
3. The potential to play AFL football.
4. The ability to perform football skills to a high level.
5. Fitness and athleticism
6. Evidence of a positive attitude to training and commitment to team rules
7. Evidence of a positive attitude to education and schooling

Selections are made in August each year following the U16 Championships. The selectors are four nominated AFL Recruiting Managers, AFL Talent Manager Kevin Sheehan and Academy Head Coach, Terry Wheeler.

The athletes, all turning 17 years of age during the 12-month term of their scholarship, will receive support and financial assistance for education and skill development.
