The decade begins a new era in the game, the Victorian Football League becomes the Australian Football League, acknowledging the national expansion, with clubs now in Sydney, Queensland & Perth, and the league adopts the much more national official name.Round 22, 1990, a league first occurs when all four Daniher brother play in the same Essendon side defeats St Kilda at Moorabbin.Collingwood & West Coast draw in the 1990 Qualifying Final after Eagle Peter Sumich misses a shot after the final, the Pies would win the resulting replay. This would be the last time a drawn final would be replayed the following the week, extra time for tied finals is introduced from 1991 onwards.Collingwood defeats Essendon in the 1990 Grand Final to win its first Premiership in 32 years.Also during 1990, the AFL announces yet further national expansion will take place for the 1991 season when the first team from South Australia will enter the competition, playing its home games at Football Park. It will also mean the re introduction of the bye, an uneven number of clubs, 15 means there will be 24 Rounds, each team having two byes during the season.Round 1, 1991, Adelaide plays its first game in the AFL, defeating Hawthorn at Football Park.During 1991, the league enters into a 40 year agreement with the MCC to play at least one final each week at the MCG during the Finals series.Fitzroy plays two home games in 1991& 1992 at North Hobart Oval in Tasmania.Round 21, 1991, the last league game is played at Windy Hill, Essendon would move to the MCG from 1992.At the end of 1991, the Under 19’s competition ceases to exist; it would be replaced by a broader Under 18’s competition spread across Victoria in 1992 with no direct links to the AFL clubs.The McClelland Trophy is changed; from 1992 it would be awarded to the senior team finishing on top of the AFL ladder following the Home & Away season.The 1991 Grand Final sees history made on several fronts, due to MCG redevelopment, it’s played at Waverley Park, the first Grand Final at the ground, West Coast reaches the Premiership decider, the first time a club outside Victoria had made the Grand Final and Hawthorn captain Michael Tuck makes his record 426th senior appearance, retiring on a winning note.The 1992 season begins with a number of changes & firsts; a new colour video scoreboard is used for the first time at the MCG, an MCG that unveils the new Great Southern Stand. The AFL decides to move its headquarters to new offices built within the brand new stand.Round 7, 1992, Geelong breaks the league record for the highest ever score in a game, kicking 37.17.239 defeating Brisbane at Carrara by 164 points, it included a record 14 last quarter goals & a Billy Brownless kick after the siren the break the record.Round 23, 1992, the last league game is played at Carrara; from 1993 Brisbane moves permentely to the GABBA.Round 20, 1992 St Kilda’s plays the last league game at Moorabbin; from 1993 it plays its home games at Waverley Park.West Coast reaches its second successive Grand Final, defeating Geelong in the 1992 Premiership decider, making history by becoming the first non Victorian club to win the games Holy Grail.Changes are made for 1993; the Home & Away season is reduced to 22 Rounds, the bye remains, each club only playing 20 regular season games. While a three umpire system is introduced.Essendon’s Gavin Wanganeen becomes the first indigenous player to win the Brownlow Medal in 1993.A 1993 Qualifying final between Essendon & Carlton at the MCG is the first final played under lights.1994 & a third interchange player is introduced for all games, also a new strict blood rule is introduced, bleeding players or a player with blood on them in anyway must leave the field immediately & be replaced.Late 1994 & the league announces a second club from Western Australia will enter the competition in 1995; the Fremantle Dockers will become the AFL’s 16th team.West Coast wins its second Premiership, winning the 1994 flag, once again defeating Geelong in the Grand Final.1995 & with the introduction of Fremantle into the competition, the bye is eliminated, the Dockers lose their Round 1 game to Richmond at the MCG by only 5 points.Fitzroy plays West Coast at Bruce Stadium in Canberra, the first ever match for Premiership points in the ACT.Carlton has one of the league’s best ever seasons, winning the 1995 Premiership, winning 23 or a possible 25 matches.1996 & the AFL celebrates it’s Centenary Year, a year of celebrations includes major off field events, re enactment games to coincide with the competitions first ever round in 1897. Round 7 marking the occasion, all clubs wear heritage Guernseys; this includes a Wednesday night game between Essendon & Geelong where Bomber Darren Bewick kicks 9 goals.Round 10, 1996, the lights fail during the 3rd quarter of a Saturday night match between St Kilda & Essendon at Waverley Park, the match was finally finished the following Tuesday night,Round 22, 1996, Fremantle defeats Fitzroy at Subiaco Oval in the clubs last ever match.A truly national flavour comes over the 1996 Finals Series, 5 of the 9 Finals are played outside Victoria, including the first ever finals matches in Brisbane & Sydney. A post final siren behind by Swan Tony Lockett puts Sydney in their first Grand Final since relocating in 1982.Kangaroos defeat Sydney in the 1996 Grand Final; they are awarded gold Premiership Cup to commemorate the AFL’s Centenary season.The 1997 Pre Season sees many changes; a second team from South Australia enters the competition, the Port Adelaide Power to also play their home games at Football Park. Footscray begins playing home games at Princes Park while changing their name to the Western Bulldogs. While Brisbane & Fitzroy merge to become the Brisbane Lions.The first South Australian team win’s the AFL Premiership, Adelaide defeating St Kilda in the 1997 Grand Final.North Melbourne plays a home game at Manuka Oval in Canberra in Round 18, 1998, taking on Port Adelaide the game began at 11:40am.Round 10, 1999, Sydney’s Tony Lockett kicks his 1300th career goal, breaking Gordon Coventry’s al time record.Round 22, 1999, Hawthorn defeats Sydney in the last game for Premiership points at Waverley ParkA fourth interchange player is introduced for all clubs to use during games for 1999, North Melbourne changes it’s name to just the Kangaroos as they win the last Premiership of the century.
