Port Melbourne 20-12-132 defeated Springvale 11-13-79
Goals – Worner 3, S Fisher 2, Peckett, Houlihan, Carroll, Heenan, Smith, Kosch.

Springvale proved to be no match for competition leaders Port Melbourne at TEAC Oval on Saturday.

With Daniel Wulf joining Brett Moyle, Raphael Clarke and Barry Brooks on the sidelines and Leigh Montagna a late inclusion to the Saints team, Springvale were fielding less Saints players than at any stage this season.

It didn’t seem to show as the Scorpions remained competitive with the Borough for much of the game. However they made it difficult for themselves by conceding 3 goals during time on in the third quarter. They started the final quarter brightly but after missing 3 gettable shots at goal were blown away to the tune of 53 points.

The usual suspects were amongst the better players for Springvale with ruckman Nick Stone and midfielder Steve Harrison leading the way. In the absence of Brooks the ruck duties were again left to Stone who battled manfully against the bigger opposition. He collected 26 possessions and 9 marks in a strong performance while Harrison was his hard working self also picking up 26 possessions.

Defender Ben Heenan worked tirelessly all day whilst Jason Gram used his pace on a number of occasions. Major goal kickers were Springvale youngster Chris Worner with 3 goals and Sam Fisher with 2 goals.

The other Saints to play on Saturday were Peckett, Houlihan, Ferguson and Murray.

For Port Melbourne, former Saint Steve Lawrence was best on ground with a 4 goal performance while ex-saints rookie Ben Schwarze was amongst the best.

Next Sunday afternoon at 2pm Springvale host the Northern Bullants at Shepley Oval. The losing team will be left stranded at the bottom of the ladder so get down to the ground and watch two very committed teams compete with much at stake.
