VIDEO reviews of every match have largely eradicated violent incidents from the game, but a handful of players have still received lengthy penalties in recent years.

No less than seven players have been suspended for six or more weeks since the match review panel system was introduced in 2005.

Fremantle hard man Dean Solomon received the most severe penalty of eight weeks for his late, high hit on Geelong midfielder Cameron Ling at Skilled Stadium in round 15, 2008.

Solomon apologised immediately after the game for the strike that left Ling requiring surgery for a fractured cheekbone, but nothing could save him from the MRP handing him a long stint on the sidelines.

In round four, 2008, then-Sydney Swans forward Barry Hall copped seven weeks for his infamous punch on Brent Staker that knocked the ex-West Coast defender out cold at ANZ Stadium

St Kilda tagger Steven Baker received the same penalty in round 20, 2007 after he was found guilty of rough conduct in an off-the-ball incident that left Fremantle's Jeff Farmer concussed and bloodied.

Baker's initial four-match ban was increased to seven games once his previous poor record was taken into account.

One of the most famous exponents of the bump, Byron Pickett, heads a group of four players to have received six-game suspensions.

Pickett's bump on Adelaide's James Begley in a pre-season clash at AAMI Stadium in 2005 was the first charge assessed by the MRP and they didn't hold back.

Jeff Farmer also received a six-game ban for a pre-season incident after eye-gouging North Melbourne defender Daniel Pratt at Etihad Stadium in 2008.

At the other end of the season, former Magpie Brodie Holland's big bump on Western Bulldog Brett Montgomery in the opening moments of the 2006 elimination final at the MCG earned him a six-game holiday.

And Holland’s Collingwood teammate, Ben Johnson, suffered the same fate in round 20, 2007 after his attempted bump on Melbourne's Daniel Bell went horribly wrong, catching the Demon midfielder in the head while he was bent over chasing a loose ball.
