IMPROVEMENT from West Coast's mid-tier players is the key to the side playing finals football in 2009, according to captain Darren Glass.

After leading his full squad out for an early November skills session, Glass tipped improvement across the entire Eagles list.

But with established players such as Adam Hunter, Brett Jones, Beau Waters and Shannon Hurn now returning to the track after season-ending injuries in 2008, Glass said there was plenty of growth to come from the group.

"The aim is to make the finals," the skipper said on Wednesday. "(So) we're hoping they work pretty hard this pre season.

"I think we can get an improvement across the board from senior players, from what you'd call middle tier and then of course you're looking for some improvement from the younger guys."

While Glass -- who is beginning his 10th pre season in the AFL -- performed humbly in the 2km time trial, he was impressed with 19-year-olds Mitch Brown and Tim Houlihan.

Fresh off a team best beep test last week, Brown was again leading the way alongside Matt Spangher, Beau Wilkes and Andrew Embley. But it was Houlihan, a noted junior runner, who blitzed the field.

"Timmy, he's got some work to do [but] he's an impressive runner," Glass said. "As long as he keeps working hard on his football I'm pretty sure he'll play some games for us this year."

And while Brown, who is returning from a knee reconstruction, would be a welcome ally in the Eagles' back line, Glass wasn't ready to commit his impressive young teammate to either end of the ground just yet.

"I think Browny could fit in [down back] nicely," he said. "We saw what his brother (Nathan) did at Collingwood last year and I think Browny could also be a forward. So he'll be a pretty talented player.

"He's worked really hard on his rehab and I think this time last year he was up and flying as well.

"So he's a good kid and really looking forward to seeing him play some games of footy this year."
