When Shane Mumford walked into the Sydney Swans changerooms, he noticed something… the number 41 locker didn't have a name on it.

There are a number of ways a player can get his name on a locker, including playing at least 100 Club games, winning a premiership, kicking 100 goals in a season, winning a Brownlow medal or the Club best and fairest.

Locker 41 is currently blank but Mumford would love to see his name on it.

The 23 year-old played in 41 at Geelong and requested to keep the same number when the coaches asked his guernsey number preference.

“I like the idea of making the number my own,” Mumford said.

“I am not sure what the games record is for the 41 guernsey at the Swans, but there is no one on the locker so I would love to play at least 100 games and be the first player with my name on the locker.”

Throughout the history of the Club, the 41 guernsey has not remained with a player for longer than three years. David W. Brown wore it from 1988-1990 and Troy Cook wore it from 1997-1999.

More recently the players who have started their career in number 41 but opted to change to a lower number include Tadhg Kennelly, who wore it in 2000 and 2001 before changing to 17 and Ed Barlow, who wore it in 2007 before changing to 11 in 2008.

If Mumford gets what he hopes for, he will wear the number a lot longer than anyone before him.
