Cameron Mooney came to Geelong with premiership experience under his belt. Mooney began his career with NSW/ACT Rams in 1996 and the Kangaroos selected him as the 56th pick in 1996 national draft. After playing in the premiership side that defeated Carlton in 1999 he was traded along with the draft picks that were used to select David Spriggs and Corey Enright for Leigh Colbert.

Mooney’s first game didn’t come until later in the year when he was selected to play against St Kilda in round 16. It was the same game in which Joel Corey debuted.

“Bomber (Mark Thompson) rang me Friday morning to play in the Friday night match,” Mooney said.

Unfortunately it didn’t give enough time for his NSW based family to get to Melbourne in time for the match and instead they watched the game on television. Mooney’s brother Jason, who also played for Geelong, was injured but very supportive before the game.

“I started on the bench and was given a chance with five minutes to go in the first quarter, I was put in full forward against Shane Wakelin”.

Mooney’s most memorable moment from the game was taking a mark in the fifty metre arc, turning and kicking to Carl Steinfort who was leading for the ball, Steinfort marked and kicked a goal.
