HAVING already defied the critics with an electrifying start to September, the Sydney Swans will need to defy recent history to reach a preliminary final, as the 2008 Toyota AFL Finals Series enters its second week.

The Swans will meet the Western Bulldogs in the second semi-final at the MCG on Friday night, having lost to the Dogs twice in the home-and-away season.

Collingwood and St Kilda clash for the remaining preliminary final spot in a blockbuster at the MCG on Saturday night.

The Swans found form at the best possible time at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night, ending North Melbourne’s season with an irresistible second half.

Ryan O’Keefe, Barry Hall, Kieren Jack and Adam Goodes were all on fire as the Swans made light of the heavy conditions to pile on 13 goals to five.

The Bulldogs should start favourites for the semi-final, but face a testing week after being at the wrong end of a commanding performance by Hawthorn on Friday night. Led by Coleman Medallist Lance Franklin, who kicked eight goals, the Hawks laid down a finals gauntlet with a 51-point win.

Flag-holder Geelong will have something to say about that, after brushing aside St Kilda in Sunday’s first qualifying final.

The 58-point loss consigns the Saints to a rematch of the round 19 clash at the MCG, which Collingwood won by 14 points.

The Pies finished the home-and-away season in eighth spot, but kept their flag hopes alive by raiding the Crows’ nest, AAMI Stadium, on Saturday.
