For The TeacherMiddle Primary Years 3 & 4Week 5Title Modified SportsTheme Skills DrillOverviewStudents will be playing a modified version of a sport. The focus will be practising specific fundamental motor skills needed to play the chosen game. The importance of being sun smart and adequate water intake while participating in physical activity will be briefly discussed.Time Required60 minutesPreparationDecide which modified game will be played. The decision can either be made by the teacher or left for the students to decide.Become familiar with the rules and ensure that all relevant equipment is ready for play.It can be played as one game which includes all class members or as small groups to maximise activity time.To prepare the students’ bodies before a game, muscles in their legs, arms and back need to be stretched (15 – 25 seconds). Some gentle aerobic exercise is recommended, and could include walking, jogging with changes in direction, high-knee marching, etc. After the game, holding the stretches for slightly longer (20 – 30 seconds) will help students warm down. Teachers will be required to direct warm up and cool down sessions lasting approximately five minutes. See Support materials and references for ideas.Teachers may like to include the additional activity of having students feel for their pulse straight after the game is completed and again following the cool down stretches to see how the pulse differs based on different intensities of physical activity (refer Week 2).To highlight the importance of water consumption, ensure the game is split into two time frames to ensure students have the opportunity to drink water and have a small rest. It is during this time the importance of adequate water intake (especially during physical activity) can be discussed. Students should also be encouraged to have some more water at the end of the game. Background information and possible discussion pointsMost sports codes can be played with modified rules to make them safer and more manageable for children. Some examples of ways in which the sports are modified can include:
  • Reduced playing field
  • Softer and smaller equipment
  • Changes to some rules
  • Shorter playing time
Examples of some sporting codes and their modified games are listed below in Support materials and references. The human body is made up of 60-75 per cent water. Water helps carry nutrients throughout the body, assists digestion and helps regulate body temperature. Human beings need to balance their water intake with what is lost on a day to day basis. Increased physical activity requires an increase in water consumption to control body temperature and to cool working muscles.Support material and referencesArticles:Fun Footy DrillsTeam Up for Good TimesTap Water Best for TeethCricketMilo “Have A Go” Crickethttp://www.cricket.com.au/default.aspx?s=milohaveagoAFLAuskickhttp://afl.com.au/default.asp?pg=ethicsnrules&spg=display&articleid=106127Auskick Coaching Guideshttp://www.aflauskick.com.au/index.php?id=112NetballNetball Australia – FUN NEThttp://www.netball.asn.au/extra.asp?id=37&OrgID=1Netball Australia – NETTAhttp://www.netball.asn.au/extra.asp?id=36&OrgID=1Netball Australia – Rules for Netta Netballhttp://www.netball.asn.au/_uploads/res/1_183.pdfWarm up games and activities (Southern Cross University)http://www.scu.edu.au/schools/edu/projects/migi/secure/teacher2/LESSON/Lwarm.htmWarm up and cool down activities (Government of South Australia)http://www.cyh.com/HealthTopics/HealthTopicDetailsKids.aspx?p=335&np=285&id=1455Water – A Vital Nutrient (Better Health Channel, Victorian Government)http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/(Pages)/Water_a_vital_nutrient?OpenDocumentSunSmarthttp://www.cancer.org.au/content.cfm?randid=906824 Thinking Strategies

Student ActivitiesTitle Modified SportsTheme Skills DrillIntroductionTo play any game of sport, specific skills need to be practised. When playing a ball sport you need to be able to run, kick, leap, jump, throw and dodge.Physical activity over time causes the body to become hot and sweaty. To help cool your body you need to drink water.Learning TasksYou will be playing a modified sports game.1. Set up the field or hall ready to play the modified game.If you are playing outside, remember to be sun smart, making sure you have a hat and have applied sunscreen as well as had a drink of water.2. Follow your teacher’s instructions for a short warm up session.3. Play the first half of the game and then stop for a half-time break to have a short rest and some more water.4. Complete the game and have another drink of water.5. Take your pulse. Describe how it feels.6. Cool down with some longer stretches.7. Take your pulse again. Does it feel any different now you have cooled down?Have fun and enjoy the chance to be physically active.
