FREMANTLE utility David Mundy and forward Ryan Murphy have signed new two-year deals to remain with the club until the end of 2010.

The re-signing of Mundy is a significant coup, considering the speculation he would return to Victoria with several Melbourne clubs keen to secure him.

It heightened after young ruckman Robert Warnock informed coach Mark Harvey and football operations manager Chris Bond last Wednesday that he would like to be traded.

However, negotiations to retain Mundy were smooth and Fremantle chief executive Steve Rosich said the club was delighted with the decisions of the pair – who joined Fremantle in the 2003 NAB AFL Draft.

"It highlights the commitment both players have shown, not only to the club, but to their teammates and Fremantle supporters," Rosich told fremantlefc.com.au.

"There has been a lot of unnecessary and unfounded speculation in the media about David's intentions.

"We have always been comfortable with David's decision to review his contract at season's end. Once David had resolved the terms and conditions of his contract it took only 24 hours to reach a final position with his management."

Mundy, who has not missed a match since his round six, 2005 debut said he was "excited about the opportunities at the club in 2009 and beyond.

"With the retirement of so many senior players there will be a lot of opportunity for guys such as Aaron Sandilands and myself to step-up into leadership roles," Mundy said.

Having played 86 matches, the 23-year-old is on target to become the third Victorian, behind James Walker (151 matches) and Heath Black (138), to crack the ton with Fremantle.

Mundy, All-Australian ruckman Aaron Sandilands and run-with midfielder Ryan Crowley were the only players to appear in each of Fremantle's 22 matches this season.

In 2005, Mundy finished third in the Doig Medal and represented Australia in the International Rules Series in 2006.

Murphy, who made nine appearances for Fremantle in 2008, has played 40 matches since round 16, 2004 while continuing his development with WAFL club South Fremantle.

He said his decision to commit to stay at the club was due to the emergence of its young list.

"In terms of team goals and my personal goals there will be an opportunity to have a really good crack," Murphy said.

"There are a lot of good signs at the club. Our level of competitiveness towards the end of the season when we won four out of last seven games gives me great confidence about what lays ahead for the club."
