NEW Port Adelaide skipper Dom Cassisi has predicted a fast and furious opening 10 minutes in his side’s round-one clash with Essendon at AAMI Stadium on Sunday.

The Power set the tone for a disappointing 2008 with four-straight-losses to kick-off last season and are relying on a better start this year to help entice supporters back to AAMI Stadium.

Cassisi said the players had been setting themselves for the hit-out with the Bombers since day one of the pre-season, way back in October.

“We’re going to have a big focus on bringing plenty of heat and intensity to the footy,” Cassisi said on Thursday.

“What got us some good wins in the NAB Cup was playing an attacking style of footy, but at the same time, a hard style of game.

“We’d like to think we’ll be playing tough early and really get it going in the first 10 minutes.”

Sunday’s season opener will also be Cassisi’s first game as skipper.

The 26-year-old, who has replaced veteran forward Warren Tredrea in the role, said leading his teammates through the banner for the first time would be a memorable occasion.

“I’m really excited and looking forward to getting out there amongst a lot of our supporters and all of the boys,” he said.

“It’s going to be a special moment, the first time, and one I’ll never forget. If we get a good result, which I think we will, it’s going to be a good day.”

Cassisi, unlike some other out-of-form senior players, was a shining light at Alberton last season. But he said it would take a combined effort from the club’s veterans to help lift the side back into finals contention this year.

“A lot of the guys in our team have experienced a fair bit of success over the years and after a year like last year, there was a fair bit of disappointment,” Cassisi said.

“It’s up to the more senior guys to play really well and make it easier for the younger guys in the team.

“After last year, we’re just really hungry to get out there, show our supporters that we have improved and, more importantly, show ourselves that we’re ready to go this year.”
